Hotels

International travellers should pick 4- or 5-star hotels, or vetted budget hotels.

⚠️ Many cheap hotels lack the licence to host foreign guests (marked "仅限内宾" / Neibin). If a listing doesn't explicitly say "all guests welcome", you may be refused at check-in even with a paid booking. Staff at 5-star hotels are usually bilingual; budget hotels rely on translation apps.

Service apartments

Guangzhou has quality high-end service apartments, especially in Zhujiang New Town and Tianhe, with 24/7 front desks — ideal for automatic police registration. Some luxury operators require a 30-day minimum, but many also accept daily or weekly stays like a hotel, with full kitchens and laundry.

Best areas for a short stay

Zhujiang New Town (Tianhe)

The modern business core — skyscrapers, top malls, very foreigner-friendly, best metro links (APM, Lines 3 & 5). Priciest in the city.

Best for: business, walkability

Tianhe

The busy commercial hub around the CBD — big shopping and dining. Lines 1 & 3. Slightly cheaper than Zhujiang New Town.

Best for: shopping, transit

Yuexiu

The historic centre, traditional feel, cultural sites and parks. Lines 1 & 2. Mid-range prices, older buildings, lots of cheap local food.

Best for: culture, budget eats

Haizhu

South of the Pearl River, home to the Pazhou Canton Fair complex. Prices spike violently in April & October, but are affordable and well-connected (Line 8) the rest of the year.

Best for: fair-goers off-season

Hostels

The cheapest option at ¥65 – ¥160 per bed. Some dorms still restrict ID types; for foreigners, booking a private room is usually safer. Check Hostelworld's "foreigner-welcome" filter for the latest list.

Short rentals (the Airbnb gap)

Booking & payment

  1. Use Trip.com. Its filter shows hotels licensed for foreign guests — the most reliable safeguard against check-in refusal.
  2. Payment. Guangzhou is cashless. Hotels usually take a pre-authorised deposit at check-in.
  3. Apps. Bind your international Visa / Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival; direct card swipe is mostly limited to high-end hotels.

The 24-hour registration (private stays)

  1. Prepare: passport, a photo of the landlord's ID, and a photo of the property ownership certificate (房产证).
  2. Find the station: the nearest local police station (派出所).
  3. Go in person: bring documents; usually 15–30 minutes.
  4. Online (conditional): the "广州公安" WeChat account or gaj.gz.gov.cn exists but varies by district and can glitch on foreign passports — in person is safest.

Common mistakes

  • Booking "Neibin-only" hotels. If not explicitly "all guests welcome", you risk refusal at check-in.
  • Ignoring Canton Fair dates. Arriving mid-April or mid-October without booking means no rooms or astronomical prices.
  • Relying on cash. Many budget stays don't keep change — set up Alipay / WeChat first.
  • Forgetting re-registration. If you extend your visa or move apartments, re-register with the police immediately.

Frequently asked questions

No. The hotel must hold the licence to host non-mainland guests. Use Trip.com's filter to confirm before booking.
No — Airbnb left China in 2022. Use Tujia or Meituan, but they're hard to use without Chinese and many hosts refuse foreigners.
Hotels do it at the front desk. For a private stay, take your passport and the landlord's documents to the local police station (派出所) within 24 hours.
