Where to buy furniture in Chongqing

Major retailers

  • IKEA Chongqing (渝北区, near Jinyu Avenue) — the default destination for modern furniture, open daily 10:00–22:00. Parcel delivery starts at about ¥9.9 for small items; van delivery for large pieces is priced by distance.
  • Red Star Macalline (红星美凯龙) — several locations including Jinzhou Avenue (金州大道) and Nanping (南坪), for higher-end domestic and imported furniture. Usually open 10:00–21:00.
  • Juran Home (居然之家) — another large chain with local and international brands across multiple stores.
💡 For the best prices and flexible delivery, consider Taobao or JD.com. Online furniture is typically cheaper than store delivery, and many sellers include assembly in the price.

Second-hand

Nanping Second-hand Market (南坪二手市场) at 16 Nanping West Road (南坪西路) sells used furniture and appliances — a practical option on a tight budget or a short stay.

⚠️ Humidity in Chongqing stays above 75% year-round. Locals strongly recommend buying a dehumidifier immediately — without climate control, wooden furniture moulds easily.

Utility costs (2025–2026)

Chongqing utilities are tiered by consumption. These are the early-2026 residential baseline rates.

How to set up and pay

1. Open or transfer the accounts

When you move in, you need to transfer or open accounts. Typically required:

  • Valid passport
  • Formal lease contract
  • Landlord's ID (copy or photo)

Take these to the local utility service hall to register the account in your name, or at least to confirm the current meter readings.

📌 Register the account using exactly the spelling on your passport — a passport number is legally required to open a new utility account in China.

2. The gas-meter check (do not skip)

Following billing audits in 2024 and early 2025, Chongqing's gas supplier was fined ¥8.1 million over over-billing and confused billing cycles after new meter installations.

  • Action: photograph the gas meter the day you move in.
  • Monitor: cross-check each monthly bill against the physical meter. If charges spike oddly, call the hotline at 966777.

3. Payment

Foreigners can bind a Visa or Mastercard to WeChat and Alipay. Unverified accounts carry a ¥1,000 per-transaction cap; completing identity verification raises the limits substantially. This is the main way to pay every utility bill.

✅ Alipay's 生活缴费 mini-program handles it all in one place — enter your account number once, then pay electricity, water and gas directly from the app.

4. Supplier apps

  • Electricity: 网上国网 app · hotline 95598
  • Water: 重庆水务 app · hotline 966886
  • Gas: hotline 966777

Broadband and mobile

After signing at a supplier's retail shop, home broadband installation usually takes 1–3 working days; a technician visits to fit the router and activate the line.

  • China Mobile (中国移动): hotline 10086 — plans typically include 10–30 GB of mobile data.
  • China Telecom (中国电信): hotline 10000.
  • China Unicom (中国联通): hotline 10010.

Cost reference: basic broadband (60 Mbps+) ≈ ¥48.80 / month; gigabit plans ¥150 – ¥200 / month; mobile plans ¥47.25 – ¥100 / month.

Fibre availability

China Mobile has rolled out gigabit fibre coverage across township-level areas and above. If you need high bandwidth, ask specifically whether the building supports "gigabit" speeds before signing.

Note: many Western websites and apps are not reachable on a standard Chinese home router. If you rely on them, arrange your own solution on your personal devices before you move in.

Chongqing vs. Beijing

Common mistakes

  1. Ignoring the gas meter. New residents tend to trust auto-debit. Given recent billing irregularities at the city's gas supplier, verify your own readings manually.
  2. Assuming central heating. Chongqing has no central heating system as northern China does. Winters are not extreme but are damp and raw; residents rely on AC units or standalone electric heaters, paid for out of pocket.
  3. Underestimating mould. Summers reach 40 °C with extreme humidity; without airflow, clothes and furniture mould. A dehumidifier is a necessity, not a luxury.
  4. Not registering at the local police station. Foreigners must register their address within 24 hours of moving in; the landlord should accompany you.
  5. Ignoring seasonal power spikes. Tiered pricing plus summer air-conditioning can push electricity bills to 3–4 times winter levels — budget ¥200–400 / month for July and August.

FAQ

Why is my gas bill so high? If a bill looks wrong, compare it against the physical meter reading. If they do not match, complain via the 966777 hotline.

Is there central heating in Chongqing? No. The city lies south of the Qinling–Huaihe line, so there is no subsidised municipal heating — you pay for your own electric or AC heating.

Which app is best for paying bills? Alipay and WeChat are the standard tools. Both now accept foreign Visa and Mastercard, so you can pay even without a Chinese bank account.
